Once I saw this prompt for VeganMoFo day 13, I knew exactly what I wanted to post about: two awesome low packaging shops in the central belt of Scotland which offer the option to fill your own container in order to reduce waste. In Edinburgh, we have the wonderful and (relatively) well-established New Leaf Co-op, whilst Locavore has recently opened up across in Glasgow.
The way it works is that you can take in your own jar or tupperware box which gets weighed, then you fill it with your foodstuff of choice and it gets weighed again, so that they can work out the difference and charge you accordingly. Brilliantly simple!
You can also find out about more ways you can help reduce food waste by visiting the very handy Love Food Hate Waste website from the organisation Zero Waste Scotland.
The New Leaf Co-op, 23 Argyle Place, Edinburgh EH9 1JJ
The New Leaf Co-op is a brilliant workers' co-op which has been based in the south side of Edinburgh since 2012. Check out all those amazing dispensers full of tasty things to fill your containers with, including a giant tub just full of nooch! They also have the option to grind your own nut butter into your own container, with different nuts available on different days of the week.
All the photos below are used with kind permission of The New Leaf Co-op, and you can click on any of them to view an enlarged version.
Locavore, 349 Victoria Road, Glasgow G42 7SA
This new shop has just opened this year in the Govanhill area of Glasgow. They are a social enterprise who aim to make our food system more local and sustainable. Hoping to be able to add some photos to this post soon!
