New and improved vegan food options in Edinburgh

Last year for Vegan MoFo, I wrote up a quick blog post listing my favourite places to eat in Edinburgh as a vegan. However, since then we've had some great developments of new and improved places to eat vegan in the city, so I wanted to share them with you! Hopefully they'll be of use if you're coming to the city for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2015, or even just for a holiday in the near future. As always, you can click on any of the photos below to enlarge them.

Henderson's Vegan

First up we have the amazing news that Henderson's Bistro has become Henderson's Vegan! They are currently at the time of writing Edinburgh's only solely vegan venue. The menu looks great and everything I've tried so far has been exceptional. A small cosy space which is ideal for lunch or dinner, Henderson's Vegan is definitely a must-visit if you're in the city.

Henderson's Restaurant

Henderson's Restaurant on Hanover Street is still just vegetarian for the time being, but they're still offering excellent vegan options and have recently introduced an expanded breakfast menu which includes delicious vegan pancakes!

Nova Pizza Vegetarian Kitchen

This new vegetarian cafe on Howe Street offers a separate extensive vegan menu of pizza and pasta dishes, including vegan cheese, ham and pepperoni. It's an ideal casual dining place in the New Town, and well worth getting to for a quick bite to eat.

La Favorita

La Favorita now offer vegan rice milk cheese on their pizzas in both their Leith Walk restaurant and their takeaways across Edinburgh. Tasty, high quality pizza made in a wood-fired oven.

The Piemaker

The Piemaker have recently updated their pie menu, including their selection of tasty vegan pies. Whilst I've heard quite a few good reviews for the tasty seedy Mediterranean ring now on offer, I have to say that I think the mushroom bougatsa is definitely my favourite of the new pies available!

Breadshare

This new vegetarian cafe and bakery opened in Portobello in January 2015. The managers have vegan kids, so they're very knowledgeable about the vegan options! The bakery clearly labels all their homemade bread with the ingredients so you can be sure you're getting a vegan loaf too. I recommend trying the olive foccacia in particular.

The Roseleaf

This gastropub in Leith offers a separate vegan menu, including vegan brunch. I've been once with Edinburgh Vegan Meetup and thoroughly enjoyed it as it's a lovely space with great food as well as drink. Nice for a fancier pub night out, Sunday brunch or to finish off a walk along the Water of Leith.

A Vegan Guide to Edinburgh Zine

In other news, I've been involved in producing a new zine with some friends from Edinburgh Vegan Meetup this year, and our first edition was finished earlier this month. We sold our entire initial print run at the Edinburgh Vegan Festival last weekend but we'll be printing some more soon, so I'll put up a post once we've got some more ready to go!

  2. Nice! Love that there is the wee vegan -friendly cafe in Portobello now. I lived there for years and wish it would have been there then!
