September Vegan Night at the Bread Street Brasserie

If you live in Scotland and haven't yet been to one of the fantastic vegan nights at the Bread Street Brasserie in Edinburgh, I seriously suggest you give it a try! I've been to two so far, one in June and one tonight, and the quality has been superb both times, and very good value at just £15 for a three course meal.

The way it works is you get a menu with three different choices for each course, so you get a decent range of choices as to what you can have. Each of the two times I've been to this vegan night, I've been along with a non-vegan, and they've both been seriously impressed with the choices and the quality of the food.

I started with the wild mushroom, garlic and parsley bruschetta with charred spring onions and rocket, which was incredibly delicious! I love mushrooms and spring onions, so this was a winner for me:

Next, both myself and my friend chose the pumpkin, spinach and Tofutti lasagne with chickpea salad (and plenty of rocket!). Sadly, my photo doesn't really do it justice, but trust me when I say that this course really stole the show. My (non-vegan) friend even said that it was amazing how she didn't even miss the dairy at all, and I have to agree that it was amazingly tasty, not just for a vegan lasagne, but for any lasagne in general!

Finally, I finished with the lightly spiced mixed berry crumble with crème anglaise. It was very nice, with some strong fruity flavours, but I did find myself somewhat enviously eyeing up my friend's apple strudel with toffee sauce and ice cream, which also looked fantastic.

In general, it is true that I do prefer to go to all-vegetarian/vegan cafes and restaurants if possible to support their business, but there is definitely a case to be made for supporting non-veg*n businesses to expand their vegan options and show that there is a demand for vegan food out there too. In the case of the Bread Street Brasserie on their regular vegan nights, the quality of the food, the friendliness of the staff and the calm, pleasant atmosphere make for an incredible meal out, and I'd recommend it to anyone to go along, especially if you have non-vegan friends and family who don't realise just how delicious and exciting vegan food can be!


  1. all that food looks so amazing. I can't imagine being able to eat a piece of vegan lasagna without having to make it myself. What a joy!! I know what you mean about encouraging and supporting omni-spots in their efforts to offer more vegan choices. It's really cool that this restaurant does it at all, and especially that they do it so well!

  2. What a fantastic idea. I wish more restaurants would do something like this! There are a couple of restaurants here that will do something similar if you call ahead. It's fun!

      Great to hear from you! I'm looking forward to coming again soon, not least because the restaurant was already fully booked for the October vegan night by the time I rang to try and make a reservation! Do you have a date set for the November one yet?
